Why I’m Running
I’m Michaela Conway, and I’m running for the Nebraska State Board of Education to put students, families, and educators at the center of every decision.
I’m a public school graduate, a parent of five students in our district, and a current local school board member. I know firsthand what works in our schools and where systems fall short. I’m running because I believe Nebraska can do better by listening, leading with integrity, and staying focused on what actually helps students succeed.
Education is about more than policies or politics. It is about whether every child can read, think critically, feel supported, and graduate ready for what comes next. Strong academics matter. So does mental health. So does making sure our classrooms are staffed by great teachers who are respected, supported, and able to stay in the profession.
Throughout this campaign, I am listening to families, teachers, and students across District 5. My priorities are clear: improving literacy and academic outcomes, strengthening teacher recruitment and retention, and ensuring transparency and accountability at the state level. I believe in practical solutions, honest leadership, and decisions rooted in data, not ideology.
I bring both lived experience and governance experience to this role. As a school board member, I have worked on policy, budgets, and student equity issues, always asking one question first: How does this impact students? I do not believe leadership should happen behind closed doors. I believe in open communication, collaborative problem solving, and giving our communities a real voice.
It would be an honor to represent District 5 on the State Board of Education. I will lead with integrity, listen before I decide, and work every day to ensure Nebraska’s schools prepare every student for a strong, successful future.
